House alteration in Swanland, HU14 3NB

May 2012

The client purchased a tired 1930’s bungalow in Skirlaugh with a view to altering the property significantly. The original dwelling was a meagre 1400 sq.ft. in floor area; however after the alterations were carried out the dormer bungalow was increased in size to a luxurious 3025 sq.ft dewlling. The main feature of the new space is undoubtedly the kitchen and dayroom, which has a split-level ceiling and large area of glazing overlooking the garden to the south.

The client was a major land owner in the East Riding of Yorkshire who wished to develop a generous plot of land adjacent to the pond in South Dalton.  The client had owned this land for many years, and intended to build a Dower House. Centric to the design was the client’s wish to have a covered parking area to connect the garage with the main house and provide space above for a library. The three-bedroom dormer bungalow provides approximately 5000 sq.ft. of accommodation.

The client purchased the property with a request from the vendor that the house should be lived in by a family and extended sympathetically. The client unselfishly adopted the wishes of the vendor and the modest bungalow was extended to maximise the idyllic one-acre plot of land in the desirable village of Swanland. The original 2400 sq.ft. bungalow was extended to create a beautiful and elegant dormer bungalow with a floor area in excess of 4800 sq.ft. and views over the Humber Estuary.
